Ever wanted to know a bit more about our authors? Now you can!
Without further ado, here’s Gemma Bell, author of Running with Robins, to tell us more.
Where were you born?
Are you a full-time author? If not, what do you do?
I would like to be a full-time author, but otherwise I’m a town planner.
Why did you decide to write a book?
I’ve been wanting to write about my dad for years, but it was only after my running accident that I was determined to do it.
Who’s your inspiration?
I don’t have any role models or aspire to be like anyone else because I think it’s important to just be “you”. My dad inspired me to run, so without him suggesting I give it a go I wouldn’t have achieved all that I have with my running.
What’s your favourite book?
Growing up, I loved illustrated books – especially Judith Kerr’s, hence why I’ve illustrated my book with my robin drawings. I don’t have a favourite book, but I loved Harry Potter and all things magical as a teenager. Now, I prefer non-fiction (especially nature-based ones) because I feel I can relate to them more.
Who would be your first choice to play you in a hypothetical film/TV adaptation?
My twin sister!
Choose three songs for the soundtrack:
It depends on my mood, but if I need an energy/mood boost, it would be ‘Survivor’ by Destiny’s Child, or Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’. I love classical film scores too, especially the Pirates of the Caribbean film soundtrack.
Describe your perfect day. Where would you be? What would you do?
An energising morning run before breakfast just as the sun is rising, followed by a long hack in Windsor on my favourite pony, Susie. Then, I’d have a relaxed picnic with my family by the river before heading to London to see an evening musical in the West End. Finally, a delicious Chinese supper in London’s China Town.
Imagine that Trigger is holding a talent show. What’s your act?
What’s your favourite quote?
I’ve got too many to name!
- “Once you hit rock bottom, the only way is up.”
- “The lower you fall the higher you bounce back.”
- “You only fail when you don’t try your best.”
- “You regret the things that you don’t do more than the things you do.”
- “Temporary pain for eternal glory.”
- “Home is where the heart is.”
- “Love never dies: it lives on.”
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Create your own path in life; don’t follow anyone else’s.
